English

March 21 OF 2018 from 07:00 PM to 09:00 PM

This is a story about clothes. The fashion industry is one of the biggest connection points for
millions of people around the world.

This is a story about sustainability. The world consumes about 80 billion new garments every
year. Four hundred per cent more than just twenty years ago. The United States alone
produces more than 11 million tons of textile waste per year.

This is a story about people. Ninety-seven per cent of clothing is manufactured abroad. There
are about 40 million workers in the clothes manufacturing industry – the lowest paid workers
in the world. Eighty-five per cent are women with no rights or protection.

This is a story about corporate responsibility.
We have the highest levels of inequality and
environmental destruction that the modern world has ever known. We must find a way to
carry on whilst respecting people and the planet.

The True Cost is a documentary by Andrew Morgan about who really pays the price of our
clothes. Filmed in countries around the world, it features interviews with some of the world’s
most leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva.

Joining in the discussion on this occasion will be Elena Salcedo (Lic&MBA 99), academic
assistant at ESADE and professor at Institut Europeu del Diseny.
