Returns in banking. A new business model on the horizon?

Spanish

April 10 OF 2019 from 07:30 PM to 09:00 PM

The ESADE Alumni Finance Club is hosting this event in conjunction with the CGRE (initials in Spanish of the Risk Management Club of Spain) about the new business models necessary in the banking industry in order to achieve acceptable returns, currently far removed from the cost of capital in many banks.

The core issues in the finance industry – the regulations with the highest capital and risk control requirements, reputation and the need to regain it – affect and combine with the necessary returns the sector is required to produce – returns that are often low and under threat on several fronts.

It is not merely a matter of low business returns caused by low interest rates or the fact that more capital is needed to produce these returns. Neither is it due to new agents inside and outside the industry with radically different business models, nor the great investment needed in technology and digitisation, etc. What needs to be discussed is the challenge of regaining certain returns that are only possible by means of new business models, i.e. models that take all these requirements into account and cater for the demands of different types of consumers and of new and different companies in societies and circumstances quite different to those in which they had been carrying out their businesses.
