The inefficiencies and injustices observed in today’s current status quo are currently giving rise to new social and economic paradigms. Little by little, alternative models that champion a balance between the economy and the environment are emerging as possible solutions to the ecological onslaught of modern times.

However, it is sometimes difficult to understand all the theories and the exact ideas behind the different models: Green economy? Blue economy? Circular economy? This webinar will explain the origins and principles of each of these concepts, their common denominators and the differences between them; will outline the initiatives and policies that exist in Europe and around the globe for implementing them; and will reveal how they contribute to the shift towards sustainable development and particularly the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations.

Real exemples

Usitoo
Using the principle of the sharing economy, the co-creators of ussito have developed a sharing platform for domestic objects that people do not use on a daily basis, and could just share (Library of Stuff ). Potentially very significant considering the amount of over-consumption in the western societies and the urgent need to change consumption habits. This sort of solution contribute to shift paradigm (from consumption to convenient sharing).

Recreate
This is a warehouse dedicated to organise different type of waste products from the industry that can be used for arts&crafts purposes by different organisations (schools, communities,…). They also deliver art&crafts workshops. Whilst there is a large diversity of initiatives reusing materials for arts&crafts, none has been taking it to scale by building up a wharehouse.

Fruta feia
Even though the idea is now quite widespread worldwide, it seems that the portuguese initiative was the first to launch the idea of re-selling fruits that are deemed unfit for selling from producers to retailers (idea dates back 2013). This is a social cooperative that invest in its mission and organises workshops in schools to raise awareness on appearance vs taste. it also contributes to cooperation with other food waste projects and social institutions by donating the leftover boxes at the end of the day

Dell'Atti
This is an innovative idea that uses circular economy to reuse kids' clothes from 0-3 using a monthly subscription fee. The need to change consumer's buying pattern regarding the apparels industry is very pressing. The kids' market does represent a very significant part of this market with clothes that have much shorter useful life than the adults' ones. It's definitely an opportunity for a circular economy concept to grow.

Longtime
This is an original initiative that complements many other initiatives linked to CSP and the circular economy. Whilst the idea of a label is not original, creating a label that would positively discriminate the durability of products is innovative. If the label gets interest and reaches critical mass, it could, as some eco-labels have done, change the way some industries behave and encourage them to create more durable goods, reversing the current tendencies of timed lifespam of products (something that the company will monitor as part of its impacts)
