The prevailing rationale that underpins business dynamics and the definition of managerial activities is performance-oriented. Whilst this approach is important, it is obviously not enough to equip executives with the criteria needed to find their bearings in today’s complex world. Important decisions are not just technical, they always involve value judgements too. Executives must, therefore, aim to be magnanimous because emotional persons and those with intellectual shortcomings are unlikely to be able to guide or drive companies in the right direction. “Small” people do not become great by climbing onto a pedestal. The executive’s path to development might be a different one. ESADE Alumni is pleased to invite you to this Refresher Programme talk entitled “Magnanimity. A cornerstone of executive development”, by Alberto Gimeno (Lic&MBA 84/PhD 99), associate professor in the ESADE department of general management and strategy. Alberto Gimeno PhD in Business Administration. Winner of the Family Firm Institute (FFI) award for the Best Doctoral Dissertation. Associate professor in the ESADE department of strategy and general management. Member of the Applied Research Board of the scientific journal Family Business Review (FBR), fellow of the FFI, secretary general of the Socratic Dialogue Institute, and founder partner of Family Business Knowledge. Member of the editorial board of the scientific Journal of Family Business Strategy (JFBS). Alberto has been a member of the Expert Group in Family Business of the EU Commission, a permanent visiting professor at the Wittener Institut für Familienunternehmen, professor in the International Leaders’ Program (Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey) and member of the Body of Knowledge of the FFI. Co-founder and member of the Global Board of the STEP Project (Global Entrepreneurship Management Practices). At ESADE, he has been the head of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) and the CEMS Master in International Business. Author of many published papers in the realm of family business about governance, professionalisation, relatives, succession, change and mindsets. Author of the book Modelos de Empresa Familiar. Consultant and international speaker on family business. He has been an entrepreneur in environmental realms and the managing director of an FMCG company, and is currently the chairman of a bio-medical start-up.
