Recommender systems have been part of the Internet for almost two decades. Dozens of vendors have built recommendation technologies and marketed them in two waves roughly aligned with the web 1.0 and 2.0 revolutions. Today, recommender systems are found in a multitude of online services. They have been developed using a variety of techniques and user interfaces. They have been nurtured with millions of users’ explicit and implicit preferences (most often with their permission). Frequently they provide relevant recommendations that increase the revenue or user engagement of the online services that operate them. In this talk we will review the main aspects involved in building recommender systems, including the general concepts, algorithms, and engineering aspects.

ESADE Alumni is pleased to invite you to this Refresher Programme talk, ''The Big Promise of Recommender Systems '', by Marc Torrens, professor in the ESADE department of operations, innovation and data sciences.

Marc Torrens

Marc has published more than 20 papers in international conferences and journals, and has invented more than 20 patents related to recommendation and personalization technologies. He co-chaired the ACM conference on recommender systems in 2010 with more than 400 experts from the academy and the industry. He also regularly acts as a reviewer at international AI conferences. His research focuses on how AI can solve problems faced by business and people. Marc is convinced that AI will help humans overcome some of the challenges they have always had and dramatically improve their lives.

Rather than following a traditional academic career, Marc spent more than 20 years creating AI start-ups. He co-founded Strands, Inc. in 2004, now a well-established, acknowledged, global fintech company working for top-tier banks worldwide including Barclays, Deutsche Bank, BBVA, ING, Bank of Montreal, BNP Paribas, Santander and Discount Bank, to name but a few. From 2004 to 2018, Marc worked at Strands as Chief Innovation and Product Officer and is currently a member of the company’s board. One of the company’s most remarkable achievements was the creation of more than 20 recommendation technology patents that were bought by Apple.

His real aim is to bridge the gap between scientific research output and the input that real-world AI systems need. Marc is excited about bringing all of his state-of-the-art knowledge in AI and entrepreneurship to ESADE to develop brilliant managers, executives and entrepreneurs able to transform the world in which we live.
