Your career doesn’t manage itself; it is led every day

When was the last time you spent time on your career without a crisis or active job search driving it?

We often need an extreme situation to put our professional career in the spotlight. However, it is essential to stop to reflect and define what you need, what you should keep, and what you should change at calm times when everything is going well.

Professional growth also means stopping, reflecting, and nurturing your development. Good career management means learning constantly, exploring new ways of bringing value, and expanding (and nurturing) your network of contacts.

Under the premise that employability is built day in and day out, Esade Alumni Careers held a session focused on lifelong development, purpose, and the value of community (watch the session here). Three alumni shared their vision and experiences to offer practical clues on how to manage your career successfully.

“Who is leading your career?” Your purpose as a professional compass

Rocío Moreno Ruiz de Mier (MBA 91, Programa para Consejeros 25). Consultant, Professor and Executive Coach.

RocioThe majority of professionals react to external factors instead of acting with intention. Defining your purpose and building an action plan to commit to are essential.

- Build your action plan: A goal without a plan is just a wish. Define your sector, the role you want, and your values. Having a clear goal helps you focus and helps others support or hire you.

- Prepare your career pitch: Identify your strengths, your value proposition, and your impact.

- Don’t wait for clarity: Clarity doesn’t come with thinking but with acting. Get moving to discover where you want to go.

“Were you supported at key points in your career?” Development as a driver of employability

Joan Miquel Malagelada (EDIK 90). Board member of EBRO, President of the Esade Alumni Automotive and Mobility Club, and Esade Alumni mentor.

Joan MiquelDeveloping career levers beyond changing your immediate job is essential to strengthen your employability. Surrounding yourself with mentors, coaches, and inspiring professionals helps you keep your focus without losing sight of your purpose.

- Assess your professional baggage: Avoid getting stuck by reviewing your advances. Ask yourself what you have learned in the past three years. If you have not added new skills or knowledge, it’s time to act.

-Find a mentor: Surround yourself with people who understand your environment and circumstances. Your mentor will guide you in both the technical aspects and the strategic development of your career.

-Find support in your professional community: After completing your training, keep up the contacts that will drive your career over time.

“If it isn’t shared, talent loses impact.” Networking as a strategic act

Ivo Güell (DEM 01). Trainer, Consultant, and Esade Alumni Mentor and Coach.

IvoYour network of contacts is a constant source of learning and support. Every encounter should be approached with intention, not merely as a social event: it’s best to prepare for it, identify the key players, and think about what you can give to both build valuable relationships and continue to grow professionally and personally.

-Activate your radar: Consider not only the people you already know but second-degree contacts. Networking is the strategy of being present.

-Connect success with responsibility in your message: Use your past achievements to show your ability to take on new challenges.

-Invest quality time:  Your career doesn’t manage itself, nor does your network. If you don’t cultivate it, others with less talent but more active connections will take your place.

A solid career is built with purpose, driven with development, and sustained on an active community.
